1981 Volvo 242T Gp1 “Bastos” race car

Volvo have been associated with motorsport since the 1950s with the PV444, a model renowned for both its durability and its competitiveness. Volvo went on to great success and iconic victories in both rally and touring car competitions.

1982 saw a new series in Sweden, the Volvo Turbo Cup. Six races open to all Volvo 242 and 244 from 1975 onwards, powered by the B21-A engine and the Volvo-R Sport Performance kit. Seventeen cars raced in the first round at Mantorp Park. It proved spectacular and effective marketing for Volvo and attracted well known Swedish drivers. Borje Thor took the initial title and Ulf Granberg the title in 1983. Soon the cars were picked up by other domestic championships and Volvo France supported a privateer team in the 1982 French Group 1/1B “Production” Championship. The car was prepared by the famous Magny-Cours based Danielson Team and run in Bastos livery.

Our car was built in homage to this car in 2017 and has proven a much admired and competitive car at the ever-popular Group 1 Touring Car race at Goodwood Members Meeting.

In the 2023 Goodwood Road & Racing website report on 80th Members Meeting on the “six best liveries from the 80th Members Meeting”:

“Bastos looks cool on any car that wears it. The Capris and Camaros wear the red and white flawlessly, so imagine our enjoyment when we saw, of all things, a Bastos liveried Volvo 242T. The incongruity is just too good.”

GORDON SHEDDEN ON DRIVING “THE MOST UNLIKELY RACING CAR IN THE WORLD”

At the 82nd Members Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, we caught up with three time BTCC winner Gordon Shedden to talk about his unlikely racing car here at Goodwood – a turbocharged Volvo 242T.

“The Volvo just looks like the most unlikely racing car in the world,” Shedden said, “but you know, its amazing how many people stop past the garage and look at it, and I think its got a bit of a cult following, and I think that’s pretty cool.”

Shedden put the Volvo eighth on the grid for the start of the Gordon Spice Trophy Part 1 and was up to fifth before the end of the first lap. Sandwiched between the Ford Mustang Boss 302 of Romain Dumas and Tom Ingram’s Chevrolet Camaro Z28..”

Jack Young in the second part of the Gordon Spice Trophy showed the pace of the Volvo keeping ahead of all the Capris and getting a lot of airtime on the Goodwood commentary in the process!

In part 2 of the Gordon Spice Trophy Jack Young finished the race 6th out of 21 starters with a best lap of 1.29.7.

The Volvo is a bullet proof race car with the 2.1 turbo putting out in excess of 350bhp. The car is being sold race ready fresh from its successful Gordon Spice Trophy race at the 2025 Goodwood 82nd Members Meeting.
