1978 Ford Capri MkIII 3.0 Gp1 “Eichberg” period history

Nurburgring 24h history, FIA HTP til 2031

Built by Eichberg in 1978 and campaigned extensively throughout the 1978 season in the ADAC championship driven by regular Eichberg driver Dieter Gartman as well as Klaus Niedwiedz and Hemet Dorling all under the Eichberg Team entry. Best recorded result was a class win at ADAC Hessen Preis Kassel Calden but the car was raced in 1978 at Hockenheim (twice), Zolder, Nurburgring (twice) and Zandvoort.

In 1979 the car was sold to Raimund Bisping but remained with Eichberg Racing and again ran in the ADAC Championship driven by Wulf-Gunter Schumacher. Highlights included 1st in class at the ADAC Bilstein Super Sprint at Nurburgring but again the car raced at Zolder (three times) the Jim Clark Rennen meeting at Hockenheim, ADAC Rundstrecken Trophy (6Hr) on the Nordschleiffe). ADAC Grosser Preis der Tourwagon (4Hr) and the HP Holstein Trophy at Zolder.

In 1980 the car was run under the same arrangement and notable highlights were; 2nd in class at the season opener AvD “Bergisher Lowe” Zolder, Nordschlieffe ADAC Grosser Preis de Tourenwagon (4Hr) 2nd in class ADAC “Pierburg Preis” Norfschlieffe, 1st in class at Hockenheim AvD/WAC Wiesebadener and ADAC Siegerland.

In 1981 ownership changed to Otto Sohn/ Scuderia Monasteria Munster with Eichberg running the car. Drivers for the season were Otto Sohn, Claus Gabler and Wulf and Hanno Schumacher. They competed solely at Nurburgring with many trips to the podium all in the VLN championship. Highlight was the famous 24 hr race in October where they finished 12th overall and 6th in class.

In 1982 the drivers switched slightly with Hanno Schumacher taking over from his father and Bonn Dotsch taking over from Klaus Gabler. A 1st in class is recorded in the Wagonpass. In 1983 Otto Sohn shared the car again at Nordschlieffe with Helmut Gall and clocked up three 1st in class again in the VLN Championship. 1984 Otto Sohn shared with Munster Herler and Herbert Bendorf. The car has two further races recorded in period both at Nordschlieffe in 1985 and 1986.

The previous owners to me bought the car in 2004 and restored it to the famous Eichberg livery (which it should be noted the car did not run in period) and raced it until selling to me in 2022. I then undertook an extensive restoration of the car including a Ric Wood engine and gearbox and development with Westbourne Motorsport.

The engine was refreshed by Ric Wood at the start of the 2025 season has competed at 2025 Goodwood Members Meeting (11th/24 overall and 5th/13 Capri) and MRL/HRDC Gerry Marshall where it finished 19th/32 and was 6th/11 Capri. The car has been maintained by Westbourne Motorsport at no expense spared. The car is being offered for sale at a fraction of the build cost and has FIA HTP until 2031.

For sale at £100,000 to include running spares and original Wagon Pass, numerous original race programmes and posters and spreadsheet of all results in period and the original tailgate with doble fuel filler holes (new one and fuel tank fitted to meet FIA requirements. The car is set up to run on the synthetic fuel required by Goodwood.
